First off, can I get an hallelujah for the book that got me out of the reading rut I had been stuck in for almost two months? I hadn't read a book in about a month and a half due to lack of interest. I would start a book and get bored 50 pages in. So I picked this book up from amazon not knowing what to expect. Well, I was overly impressed with the writing.
Dearest Clementine is an adorable story of love with a twist of mystery, my favorite. The story is told by Clementine a college senior who is lacking luck in the love department (much like myself haha). Her high school boyfriend cheated on her with her BEST FRIEND.
As if that's not bad enough she was stalked by a crazy college professor who was helping her with a novel she wrote her freshman year of college. Yes, that's right.. She's an author of a very successful YA novel under a pen name.
Things are finally look up for Clementine as she starts her senior year of college ready to take the last of her degree courses. She's extra excited for her YA writing class until she realizes that she signed up for a ROMANCE writing class.
Her lack of romantic experiences makes the writing class difficult until she finds inspiration and help from Gavin Murphy, a sexy RA and guitar player. He isn't your typical douchy guy, he's sweet and totally swoon worthy. They're "just friends" even though he's giving her lots of inspiration for her romance class.
There's also an open investigation following the case of a missing student from the campus, but that's for you to find out when you read.
"I’m tired of being closed off. It hasn’t made me any stronger or braver. It hasn’t imparted any wisdom or comfort. It’s just made me lonely."
I loved Gavin, he is hot and a total sweetheart! He was there to help Clementine and didn't expect a thing in return, he didn't pressure her and he made her feel comfortable and confident.
I usually dislike female protagonist because they are always make dumb decisions, but I have to say I liked Clementine a whole lot. She was smart, sensible and safe with decisions she made. She didn't cause unnecessary drama or problems.
I loved that this novel focuses on Clementine and Gavin falling in love with each other and the whole development of their relationship. I'm also happy that although it's a romance novel it wasn't overly sexual. There was great character development and an actual storyline which is hard to come by with N/A or Romance novels nowadays.
Lex Martin a debut author who is already amazing, I can just imagine how great her future book will be. I loved that feeling of falling in love with the characters. I missed that feeling.
